Moumouni Djermakoye, leader of the Nigerien Alliance for Democracy and Progress (ANDP) died Sunday at age 70, in Niamey. He played an active role in a demonstration to fight against a constitutional referendum proposed by Mamadou Tandja, Radio Kankan reports. The demonstration comes two days after a ruling by the Constitutional Court to annul a presidential decree convening the electorate for a referendum on 4 August. The president wants to seeks a third term in office.
