The telecommunications company SEA Cable System (Seacom) Thursday announced that it had finalised the development of an underwater fibre optic cable along the Indian ocean in East Africa. With the exception of Somalia, the Eastern African region will now have broadband Internet access. Only South Africa had access to a satellite but at a prohibitive cost. This new facility could revolutionise the internet sector in Africa. Another fibre optic development is underway in Southern and West Africa.
