Mauritania: Electoral Commission President resigns over elections

The president of the Independent National Electoral Commission of Mauritania (CENI), Sid’Ahmed Ould Deye announced his resignation Thursday. The electoral official expressed “doubts” over the “reliability” of the July 18 Presidential polls, following complaints made by opposition parties. Although the Commission had claimed to have found no irregularities during the elections the chairman of the organ insists he does not want to fight his good “conscience”.
