After chimpanzees, gorillas have also been proved as HIV carriers. The results were released by a team of French virologists, states Nouvelobs.com. The researchers announced Sunday that they had identified a new strain of HIV-1 — close to the simian immunodeficiency virus among gorillas–, in a 62 year old patient from Cameroon. The patient has responded positively to HIV treatment. According to other sources, the woman, who lives in France, is likely to have contracted the disease from another person in Cameroon. It is highly unlikely that she got infected with the virus through infected bush meat, since she does consume that type of meat.
