Several police and opposition sources reported clashes Tuesday in several cities of western Niger between demonstrators opposed to a referendum on a new Constitution and police forces. The police dispersed the protesters with tear gas in the region of Tahoua and two other nearby towns as they tried to prevent access to two polling stations. In a radio interview, the Nigerien Interior Minister Albada Abouba said that several people had been arrested near Dosso in Birni N’Gaouré. There were no queues at the polls in Niamey.
