France-Rwanda: Doctor accused of war crimes

According to RFI, a Rwandan doctor has been suspended from work at a hospital in Northern France after a nurse discovered he is suspected of being a wanted war criminal for his involvement in his country’s ethnic violence in 1994. Eugène Rwamucyo was employed as a doctor at a hospital in Maubeuge, his third job in the region according to Sud-Santé trade union. A nurse did an Internet search on his name and found an Interpol arrest warrant linked to the genocide in Rwanda. “I did not participate in the genocide, close up or from afar. There is nothing against me. I don’t see why the justice system wants to arrest me,” he was quoted as saying in an interview with French television. The 1994 Rwanda genocide left and estimated 800,000 people dead in 100 days. The victims were mostly of Tutsi minority.
