Niger has stated that the decision by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to suspend the country following Tuesday’s legislative elections shows that its neighbors do not understand the country’s political situation.
The regional alliance wanted the vote to be postponed in favor of dialogue to resolve the political crisis triggered by the August referendum extending President Tandja’s time in office.
According to VOA, Foreign Minister Aichatou Mindaoudou says ECOWAS should reconsider its decision, claiming that ECOWAS misunderstood the political situation.
