Mozambique: Frelimo to remain in power

According to the Financial Times, the Mozambican Liberation Front, which led the country’s independence war against Portugal is set to remain in power. Preliminary results from the just ended elections give President Armando Guebuza more than 76 percent of the presidential vote and his party, Frelimo between 75 and 80 percent of parliament’s 250 seats. The Mozambique National Resistance, or Renamo, the main opposition party formed by former right-wing guerilla fighters, is expected to come second, while a new party, The Mozambique Democratic Movement, formed by the major of Beira, looks likely to finish in third place. A National Elections Commission spokesman, Lucas Jose, said Sunday that it may take more than a week for remaning results to come in from remote regions.
