The Other Afrik - Panafrica - Conflicts - Governance
The idea of creating a single state out of the African continent is well touted by numerous scholars and political autocrats such as Gaddafi. Reference is made to the comments of Dr Kwame Nkrumah and his vision for a united Africa existing under one government presiding over one people and one nation. How practical are these ideas though? And how helpful is it when policy makers and political figureheads frolic in the realm of political idealism rather than seeking practical solutions to the on-going problems that plague the continent and its people?

mr manful,i disagree with you toltally, all this tribal conflict and devisions happen course unity that is not among us.this is a nice step thou and believe strongly that, when this mission is accomplish and things start moving smoothly, infractructure, economical, and our goods and resources are being run very well and africa people can free theirselves from poverty, all this problem will wipe off by itself. its only unity can solve our problems, thx. - Friday 13 May 2011 - 11:01

There is an opposing view to this arguement. For all the ills mentioned lies the foundation for a united africa. If this author had been exposed to the unification of Britain or any other european country he may have arrived at different conclusion. Nigeria, USA, India, Australia, are all united federal states. These respective states must have good reasons to be unified. Historical processes are exposing good reasons for africa to unite. I disagree with your opinion. African Nation States can maintain their sovereignty and unite economically. The current regional trading blocs provide a model that can be applied to the continent as a whole. Granted they are not perfect models but they do proovide a framework for Africa's economic intergration which is a critical first step towards its political integration - Friday 18 March 2011 - 17:02

I couldn't agree with you anymore. Bringing such topic to continental summits is just a way of evading important topical issues that have dogged the continent for ages and if seriously and critically discussed would dent the credentials of these heads of states. Its true that the ghosts of colonialism would always come to haunt African states each time they take a progressive step towards human development. Surely its just a nice dream. - Saturday 19 February 2011 - 16:19

Mr. Manful, Thanks for your contribution to this debate about an African Union and the related need to solve our social and economic needs. It's only through such discourse that we can fish out solutions. I will just make the following bullets: the union shd not be about it's name or form, but what it brings to the table: pooling of resources.-the history of the EU is a long one.- Africa's poverty is a result of greed & pol. mismgmt, not a quest 4 unity.
