Congolese artist and painter, Rhdode Bath-Schéba Makoumbou, is scheduled to mount an exhibition of her works from 3 October to 15 November in Bilbao, Spain.

A friend of the artist has confirmed that Makoumbou would present her latest fabrics and paintings at an exhibition at the Kalao Gallery, which specialises in African art.

“Subjects highlighted through her works are the social activities of the African woman. In the oil-base paints, she generally paints with the knife. The variety of her fabrics is illustrated in an African style … but it is also influenced by the realistic art and expressionism,” said Marc Somville, a specialist in African art.

Makoumbou, 32, who is based in Belgium, uses sawdust, adhesive and wood to create her works. She said in a recent interview that she inherited the passion for art from her father who was also a painter and sculptor.

The artist is particularly fond of over-sized sculptures that reflect modernity and yet respects tradition. Confirming that her works reflect a disappearing tradition, she also said that “An artist should be a witness of her times”.

The Congolese artist-painter who works between one and two months in Brazzaville each year, has already taken part in nearly 78 collective and individual exhibitions around the world.
