Top officials of the Nigerian Navy (NN) have left Nigerian on a tour of three Far Eastern countries for the final inspection of new platforms being procured for the navy, according to NN spokesman, Capt. Henry Babalola.

The trip to Australia, Malaysia and Singapore will enable the team, led by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ganiyu Adekeye, to check the platforms before they are shipped to Nigeria by month’s end.

During the 10-day trip, the delegation will visit the dockyards, shipyards and factories where the construction and production of ships, patrol boats, helicopters and weapon systems are being carried out.

No further details of the acquisitions were disclosed.

The delegation is also expected to confer with other shipbuilders and manufacturers for future acquisition of the NN, which is in the process of replacing ageing platforms and re-repositioning “to adequately improve maritime surveillance, thus creating a conducive environment for stress-free activities in Nigeria’s maritime environment”.
