The Ministerial Council of the Arab League has called on the League’s Secretary-General to immediately contact the AU Commission Chairperson in an effort to launch a joint Arab League-AU action to help advance the Darfur peace process and stability in the region.

The call was made by the council at its emergency meeting in Cairo, Egypt, on Sunday.

The council also condemned the attack by the rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), which the government said it had repealed, saying it threatened Sudan’s stability.

Describing the attack as a ”terrorist” act, it urged JEM to abandon all forms of violence and reaffirmed support for the efforts of Sudan’s unity government to ensure security, stability and peace all over Sudan.

It called on parties that did not sign the Darfur peace agreement to discard the military option and to commit themselves to dialogue as the sole means of achieving peace in the troubled Darfur region.

The council had reviewed the report of a Sudanese delegation, led by the State Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ali Ahmed Karti, on the attack on Omdurman.

Sudan has severed ties with Chad, which it blames for supporting the JEM attackers. Panapress .
