Deadly attacks in Northern Sudan under UN Investigation

According to a commander of a section of the rebel Sudan Liberation Army, Ibrahim al-Helwu, many civilians and soldiers have died in an attack by the Sudanese government troops on Disa and Birmaza in North Darfur state early on Saturday.

The joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping force in Darfur said it was investigating the reports.

The attacks on the towns were said to have backed by mercenaries, helicopters and planes but there has been no statement from the Sudanese military regarding the claims.

It is reported that the fighting is still taking place and there have been looting and vandalism inside the town of Disa.

According to UN official approximations, the five-yearlong conflict in Darfur has brought about the deaths of over 300,000 people and the displacement of over two million others.
