National and international experts gathered here Thursday to begin work on a UNESCO draft implementation of the regional education strategy for sustainable development. “The meeting seeks to set the sub-regional priorities and strategies and to discuss the conditions for sharing and implementing education for sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa,” the head of the UNESCO regional Bureau for Education in Africa (BREDA), Francisco Seddoh, said. Seddoh said the meeting would come up with “an action plan for the millennium for all African sub-regions for 2008-2009”. United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014), declared in December 2002 by the UN General Assembly, has called for, among other things, a refocussing of educational approaches, the review of the curricula and new teaching methods.
