French President, Nicolas Sarkozy Wednesday had talks in Paris, France, with a delegation of the International Federation of Human Rights Leagues (FIDH), the president of the organisation, Souhayr Belhassen, said.”We met this morning, at his request, shortly before his trip to Chad. We availe d ourselves of the opportunity to tell him that if his visit does not help clarify definitively the fate of the missing political opponents, we would consider his attitude as blind support to President Déby,” Mrs Belhassen said at the end of the meeting with the French pr e sident. According to her, President Sarkozy committed himself to receiving during his brief visit to Chad, the lawyers of the two missing opponents and to “talking fran k ly” about the situation prevailing in the country with his Chadian counterpart, I driss Déby Itno. “Mr Sarkozy gave us the assurance he will talk frankly to President Déby, on the fate of the missing opponents and about the need for a political dialogue. “We reminded him, for our part, that France is a signatory to the United Nations Convention on missing persons,” the FIDH stated further. “For us, all this is to be taken with greatest care. We asked Mr Sarkozy to dema nd from President Déby that he tells him the whole truth about the fate of his political opponents. “It is indeed on this issue that we are going to judge about the timeliness of h is trip,” the former leader of the Tunisian Human Rights League emphasized.
