The World Food Programme, an agency of the United Nations, estimates that more t han four million people in Zimbabwe require food aid. Rylander said the funds would be administered by a number of UN and internationa l aid agencies. The government has said it had imported at least 500,000 tonnes of the staple ma ize food from neighbouring countries to close a deficit caused in part by incess a nt rains and poor agricultural planning by the authorities.
