Nigeria’s amateur boxing authorities have announced plans to hire a foreign coach for the country’s boxing team to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. An official of the Nigerian Amateur Boxing Association (NABA), Patrick Uwagbale, told journalists here the decision to hire a foreign coach was to enhance the medal chances of the country’s five boxers, who won ticket to the games at the African qualifiers in Namibia last month. ”The foreign coach will complement the efforts of the indigenous coaches,” he said, to allay fears the decision may mean dropping the local coaches. “The standard of boxing at the Olympics is higher than that of the African qualifiers so we don’t want to take chances,” the NABA official said.
