Khieu Samphan, former Khmer Rouge head of state appeared in court yesterday in Phnom Penh for a pretrial hearing. Mr. Samphan has been in custody since November 19th with four other senior leaders of the Khmer Rouge era. Jacques Verges — who has earned notoriety for having represented terrorists, serial killers and a former Nazi officer accused of World War II atrocities — one of the lawyers representing the 76 year old Khieu Samphan, appealed against a pretrial detention. None of the leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime that resulted in the death of over 1,7 million people in Cambodia have yet been tried. (AP)
