According to France 24 the death toll of the battle between rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Sri Lankan army in the north of the island is uncertain. Both sides claim to have killed at least 100 fighters from the opposite side but also claim that they have lost less than fifty soldiers. No independent verification of the death toll has been made so far. Wednesday would be the deadliest day for the Sri Lankan forces since October 2006.
