Qatar and Mauritania sign air transport deal

Mauritanian Transport Minister Ahmed Ould Mohameden and the chairman of the Qatari civil aviation department, Abdel Aziz Nouaimi , Wednesday signed a cooperation agreement on air transportation, official sources indicated on Thursday. The agreement covers the strengthening and modernisation of the infrastructures in the Mauritanian international airport here, the funding of a new airport with the state-of-the-art facilities, the training of pilots, control tower operators , weather department and technical control.

Meanwhile a new airline, financed mostly with funds from Qatar and Mauritania, will be established soon. The new airline will be based in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott. The Qatari private operators will hold 60 per cent of the airline’s shares and t he Mauritanian businessmen (Mohamed Abdallah Ould Noueigued and Tajdine) 30 per c ent while the Mauritanian state will get 10 per cent. The new carrier will have an initial fleet of five aircraft with the staff of the defunct Air Mauritanie making up mojority of the staff strength.
