Three inhabitants of the Greek Lesbos island have filed a law suit against a gay rights group for using the name lesbian. According to the plaintiffs associating the name Lesbian to female homosexuality “insults the identity” of the people of lesbos who are also known as Lesbians. Some people from Lesbos prefer using Mytilene, which is the name of the island’s capital and also the most ancient version. Lesbos is famed as the birthplace of Sappho. The island, particularly the lyric poet’s reputed home town of Eressos, is a favored holiday destination for gay women. One of the plaintiff’s wonders how the quarter of million people of Lesbos origin could be associated with homosexuality.
