The military junta sets the death toll at 15,000 and UN estimates that more than 1 million people were left homeless by the cyclone according to CNN. It is one of Myanmar’s deadliest natural disasters in decades. The cyclone was most destructive in the Irrawaddy delta where entire cities were practically wiped off the map. The military Junta, usually against any humanitarian association presence, has authorized international aid under certain conditions. In 1926 a similar storm killed 2,700 people in Myanmar.
