California state supreme court has ruled that the right to a family union is applicable to all Californians. “Limiting the designation of marriage to a union ‘between a man and a woman’ is unconstitutional and must be stricken from the statute,” said the states chief justice Ron George. The earlier ban on gay marriage approved by Californians in a 2000 referendum was also supported by state governor Arnold Schwarzenegger when he vetoed legislature aimed at legitimising same sex unions and rather suggested that the court decide the matter. The court’s decision brings to two (California and Massachusetts) the number of US states that have legalised same sex marriage with other states like Vermont and New Jersey allowing similar unions.
