Supporters of Gambia’s ruling party, the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), are preparing a big party to celebrate President Yahya Jammeh’s 43rd birthday on May 25, government mouthpiece, Daily Observer, said Friday. The speaker of Gambian Parliament and a strong supporter of President Jammeh, Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay says it would be “a day of joy”. “We Gambians are lucky for such a peacemaker, developer and a great leader like President Jammeh. Therefore, his birthday should be a day of joy for all [Gambians],” she was quoted as saying. However, to many of President Jammeh’s critics, the Gambian leader is a dictator who is fast becoming a liability to his people. Jammeh led a military coup in 1994 which ended the 29-year-rule of People’s Progressive Party headed by former President Dawda Jawara.
