Popular Nigerian musician Sonny Okosun has died at the age of 61, according to the nightly news on the state-run Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). Okosun reportedly died Saturday in the United States, where he had been undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness. The local media has been awash with reports that the musician was suffering from cancer. Okosun hit the pinnacle of his music career in the 1970s, when his ”Fire in Soweto” album – which was a condemnation of the apartheid in South Africa then – put him on the international map. But his career seemed to fade in the 1980s before he bounced back with award-winning gospel songs.
