A former member of Nigeria’s national football team, Aloysius Atuegbu, has died, the local press reported Monday. Details of the player’s death are still sketchy, but the report said he died while travelling to the central city of Ilorin to watch a premier league match at the weekend. Atuegbu, one of Nigeria’s all-time great footballers, helped Nigeria to win its first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980. For that feat, he and his teammates were each given a house, a car and national honour by the federal government. He also featured prominently in club football, as a member of the popular Enugu Rangers FC based in South-east Nigeria.
