Following California Supreme Court ruling lifting a ban on gay marriage, New York governor, David Paterson in a memo to state agencies asked them to recognise gay marriages from other states and countries, including the states of California and Massachusetts as well as Canada. Failing to do so, his legal counsel said, would be tantamount to violating human rights laws.
