Swiss nationals vote against a bill judged discriminatory by supreme court

A proposal to make it more difficult for naturalisation to be accorded to immigrants has been rejected in a referendum in Switzerland. The initiative proposed by the Swiss People’s Party (SVP) suggested the naturalisation of immigrants be decided by a popular vote in the commune where the immigrant lives. The same procedure was banned five years ago after a number of communities continuously blocked passport applications. A ruling from the supreme court said the method was discriminatory.
