Morgan Tsvangirai, Zimbabwean opposition leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, has announced that his party will not participate in the country’s election run-off. A general MDC rally that was to take place Sunday was hampered as Zanu-PF and supporters of Mugabe occupied the stadium and beat up MDC supporters attending the rally. This follows the killing of over seventy of MDC supporters, the arrest of its secretary general, the multiple arrests of MDC party leaders amid widespread violence. The decision, made during a meeting of the heads of the MDC party, means that Robert Mugabe will remain the country’s president.
