Egypt’s Minister of Trade and Industry Rashid Mohamed Rashid has said the collapse of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) talks was because developed nations attempted to “push developing nations into making concessions.” Rashid said Egypt rejected the imposition of new conditions on developing countries at the Doha talks. The minister added that Egypt had pressed for new negotiation formulas to provide protection to important economic sectors” against what he called unfair competition with developed nations. He said it was better for the talks to collapse than for developing nations to make concessions that would harm “our economies and affect industrial and agricultural development.” Egypt and India have called for the tabling of the issue of illegal migration of workers from developing countries to the developed ones at any new round of WTO negotiations, Rashid said.
